What determines the price
1. Plug access. The whole ballgame. Top-mounted inline-four: 0.5-1 hour. Transverse V6 rear bank: 2-4 hours plus an intake gasket. This single factor moves the bill by $300 or more.
2. How many plugs. Four, six, or eight — and 16 on a HEMI V8, which runs two plugs per cylinder. Parts scale directly, labor roughly so.
3. Plug material. Copper is $2-$6 each and lasts about 30,000 miles. Platinum is $6-$12 and lasts about 60,000. Iridium is $8-$25 and lasts 80,000-100,000. Some European engines specify plugs at $25-$40 each.

5. Regional labor rates. $90-$140 per hour at independents in most of the country, $160-$210 in California and other high-cost metros, and $150-$250 at dealerships. The same job legitimately differs by $200 across two zip codes.
6. What comes off with the plugs. Intake gaskets ($40-$80), boots on some BMW engines, and engine covers with clips that break. Ask whether gaskets are in the quote or added later.
7. Whether anything is seized. A plug that has been in an aluminum head for 120,000 miles can fight coming out. On most engines this is a slow, careful extra hour. On a few, it is a broken plug and a $200-$1,500 recovery.

The two rows that surprise people are the truck rows. Owners assume a V8 is automatically expensive, but a Silverado is often cheaper than a Camry V6 because nothing has to come off. Route 1 — Plain maintenance, done at the right time
🟢 Who it fits: the car runs fine and the plugs are at or past their interval. Cost: $80-$450 at a shop, $20-$60 if you do it. The catch: the interval is set by plug material, and half the cars that get this service do not need it yet.
This is the cheapest version of this repair, and doing it on schedule is what keeps you off every other route in this guide. Choose the plug your manufacturer specifies. Fix it yourself

What you need: a spark plug socket with a rubber insert, an extension, a torque wrench, and dielectric grease for the boots. Work on a cold engine — pulling plugs from a hot aluminum head is how threads get damaged.
The sequence: blow or brush debris from around each plug well before removing anything, because dirt falling into an open cylinder is a real problem. Do one cylinder at a time so coils and wires cannot be mixed up. Start each new plug by hand for several turns; if it does not thread smoothly by hand, stop and reset rather than forcing it with the wrench.
The number that matters: torque to spec, generally 13-18 ft-lbs. Over-tightening strips aluminum head threads, and that repair is $500-$1,500. This is the one step where guessing is measurably expensive, and it is why the torque wrench is not optional.
On anti-seize: many manufacturers specifically say not to use it on modern plated plugs, because the lubrication causes over-torque at the same wrench setting. Follow your manual rather than folklore.

A cylinder-specific code is the most useful thing your car can tell you, because it converts a vague complaint into one of three suspects: the plug, the coil on top of it, or the injector feeding it. The coil swap separates them for free, and it is the step that makes the rest of this route cheap.
Move the suspect cylinder's coil to a neighboring cylinder and clear the code. If the misfire moves with the coil, you have found it. ⚪ Who it fits: the car runs perfectly and a shop suggested plugs during an oil change or an inspection. Cost: $0 today if you decline, $150-$450 if you agree. The catch: declining is completely reasonable here, and it is the route where most unnecessary money in this category is spent.
There is a legitimate version of this recommendation and a padded one, and one number separates them: the mileage on the current plugs against the interval for their material.
The legitimate version sounds like this: the car has 95,000 miles on iridium plugs rated for 100,000, and the shop is already in there for something else. Doing it now saves you a separate visit. That is a fair offer and often good value.
The padded version sounds like this: iridium plugs at 40,000 miles, no symptoms, no codes, and a recommendation framed as a tune-up. There is no such thing as a tune-up on a modern engine — the phrase survives from the era of points and carburetors, and today it usually means plugs, an air filter, and a fuel additive sold as a package. You are entitled to ask what specifically is failing.
The reason this matters more on some cars than others: on a $120 inline-four the padding is annoying, while on a V6 where the same recommendation carries $300 of labor, agreeing early costs real money for no benefit. Three situations belong here, and they share a common shape: the plugs are ordinary and the job is not.
Intake manifold removal. Common on transverse V6 engines where three plugs face the firewall. Two to four hours plus a gasket. The work is legitimate — the alternative, reaching blindly with extensions, is how boots get torn and plugs get cross-threaded. Ask for the gasket to be quoted up front.
Known plug-breakers. The Ford 5.4L Triton three-valve of the mid-2000s used a two-piece plug design that seizes with carbon and separates when removed, leaving the lower section in the head. Extraction requires a specific tool and patience, and it runs $200-$1,500 per plug. Shops that work on these engines quote the risk in advance and often soak the plugs overnight; shops that do not are the ones you hear about afterward.
Plugs that have been in for 120,000-plus miles. Long-seated plugs in aluminum heads bond in place. The professional approach is a cold engine, penetrating oil, and breaking each plug loose gradually rather than in one pull. Time, not force.
Fix it yourself
The honest DIY on this route is narrow, and naming the boundary precisely is the point.
Reasonable: buying the correct plugs yourself and supplying them, which removes parts markup of $20-$60 while leaving the risky part to someone insured against it. Most independents accept customer-supplied parts if you ask before booking.
Reasonable: doing the front bank of a transverse V6 yourself and paying for the rear bank. Some owners split the job this way and it is legitimate, as long as the shop knows.
Not reasonable: attempting a known plug-breaker, or working on a hot engine to save time, or using an impact wrench anywhere near a plug. Each of those converts a $400 job into a four-figure one, and the failure happens in the last quarter-turn.
At the shop — what to say:
"Have you done the plugs on this specific engine before? I know the rear bank needs the intake off. What's your quoted hours, and what happens to the price if a plug seizes?"
Why the same plugs cost four times as much on the next car over
Why is spark plug replacement $150 on one car and $600 on another? Because you are not buying plugs, you are buying access. A set of iridium plugs costs $20-$60 regardless of what it goes into. On a top-mounted inline-four, a technician removes a cover, four coils, and four plugs in under an hour at $90-$180, so the bill lands at $80-$200. On a transverse V6, three plugs sit against the firewall and the upper intake manifold has to come off, adding two to three hours plus a $40-$80 gasket, so the same parts land at $300-$450. What a plug job actually looks like

Torque. Ask: "Are the plugs torqued to spec?" On aluminum heads this is the difference between a routine job and a thread repair. It should be an easy yes.
What came out. Ask to see the old plugs. Their condition tells you whether the engine is running rich, burning oil, or perfectly healthy — free information about your engine that most people never collect.
Codes cleared and verified. Ask: "Were the codes cleared and did you road test it?" A misfire that returns on the drive home means the fault was somewhere else and the diagnosis is not finished.
Three diagnostic traps
Trap 1 — The bundle. The situation: one cylinder misfiring, code P0304. What the shop says: "We'll do plugs and all four coils, $650." What is actually happening: one coil tested bad, or would have if anyone had tested. The other three are being sold as insurance. Cost versus bill: $150-$400 for the failing coil, versus $650. Your protective question: "Which coils tested bad, and can you show me the misfire counts per cylinder?"
Trap 2 — The tune-up. The situation: routine oil change, no symptoms, 45,000 miles on iridium plugs. What the shop says: "You're due for a tune-up — plugs, filters, and an induction service, $420." What is actually happening: the plugs are at less than half their rated life and nothing is failing. Cost versus bill: $0 today, versus $420. Your protective question: "What's the manufacturer's interval for these plugs, and what symptom or code are we addressing?"
Trap 3 — The misfire that was never ignition. The situation: new plugs and coils fitted, and the stumble is still there. What the shop says: "Must be the fuel injectors, another $600." What is actually happening: on a random P0300 with no cylinder named, a vacuum leak or low compression was always more likely than ignition, and a compression test would have found it first. Cost versus bill: $80-$150 for a compression test, versus $600 spent to find out. Three real quotes, decoded
$650 quoted, $220 paid, on a 2016 sedan with a P0302. The shop offered plugs plus all four coils. The owner asked for the coil swap first; the misfire moved to cylinder three with the coil, so a single coil was replaced along with the plug in that hole. Lesson: the free test that takes ten minutes is worth $430, and asking for it is not an argument — it is a request for a diagnosis.
$367 on a 2014 V6, and it was fair. Six iridium plugs at $72 for the set, plus 2.5 hours to remove the intake plenum and reach the rear bank properly. The owner had been quoted $180 by a shop that had not looked up the engine, and that quote would have grown mid-job. Lesson: a high quote is not automatically padding.
